Resisting the urge to edit old posts

I’ve been re-reading my old posts and some of them have me feeling really sheepish. Like- I’m actually putting my hands over my face and shaking my head.

I have the urge to delete some of them and edit others. But I’m going to try to resist the urge. Because isn’t it a good thing to feel this way? Doesn’t it mean that I feel like my writing has improved a little? I think it does.

Of all the errors and mistakes I’ve made, I think my worst offenses grew from following blogger advice on structuring posts in a very specific way. You know— make sure you have lots of headings, be sure to italicize and bold text often, write for a 5th grade reading level, etc.

There’s also the advice to avoid the passive voice. But is this always best?

Fuck all that.

Moving forward, I’m going to ignore writing advice. Instead, I’m going to just wing it- go with my gut. Doing this will probably create new writing foibles, but at least they’ll be my own.

How do you fellow bloggers feel when you re-read your old stuff? Do you edit it or delete some of it? Or do you never look back?

Always curious,
